Ubuntu studio and Atheros wifi problem
 

I've a feeling this can't be fixed at the moment... but here goes.

I'm still quite new to Linux so might not get this quite right.

I have been given an Acer 5315 laptop, and want to use it for audio recording stuff, and be able to take it places, so I install Ubuntu Studio.
I'm recording from eternal hardware through USB so the internal sound isn't important. That all works fine, so no issues there.

The problem is the wifi, it's and Atheros card, shows as AR242x, which is a 50007EG I think.

I first had Ubuntu 8.04 installed, I used madwifi and it worked fine.
I updated to Studio by installing all the packages etc, and the RT kernel, and all that went fine, but lost wireless.

Looking at madwifi info it seemed a good idea to start madwifi again, download and make and stuff, following the instructions.
It installed but nothing happens, lspci shows the hardware, but it's not in the iwconfig list.

I removed madwifi and tried ndiswrapper, I found the correct drivers and installed them, that all installed and looked fine, it shows that the driver is loaded and has claimed the card, and I blacklisted ath_pci and ath_hal.

It's the same, it doesn't show in iwconfig.

Any ideas? I'm not sure if you need specific outputs posting here, if you do let me know and I'll get them.

Are you using a 64bit or 32bit Ubuntu? The newer madwifi drives will not support the AR5007EG on a 64bit OS. (The MadWiFi group is working on it, and Atheros has been (slowly) releasing its HAL software under an open source license, so the ath5k or ath9k should work fairly soon, but they (the MadWiFi group) are focused on Atheros current products rather than the older ones like the 5007.)

It's 32bit.

Ah. Well, for what it's worth, I needed to use madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6-r3698-20080604.tar.gz to get ath_pci to work on my 64bit laptop. That might work for you, too, but clearly your problem isn't related to the 64bit issues.
