Ubuntu Software Package Version Confusion

Hello there,

im a little bit confused about a software package i have installed. I need the newest possible version of usb-creator-gtk out of the repositories. My installed version is 2.23. Ubuntu version is 12.04 Precise Pangolin. And this site

http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/allpackages

states that my ubuntu version should have the usb-creator-gtk package version be 2.38.2 installed. I want to install this version. How do i do that?

I checked my /etc/apt/source.list and it seems ok. Backports are enable too. did apt-get update and apt-get upgrade. Version remains the old 2.23...

Am i missing something? I figured out my installed version with usb-creator-gtk --version.

Thank you in advance.

But maybe you guys can give me a hint about how i could install even newer versions of that package without breaking anything. Otherwise this Questions would be solved.

12.04 was released April 2012 and so will include stable software from April 2012. There have been 3 releases since then (12.10, 13.04, and 13.10) each of which has newer software. So the easiest way to get new software in Ubuntu is to keep current with the Ubuntu releases.

Some users may choose to stick with the LTS releases rather than upgrading every 6 months to get newer software. These users, can, however, upgrade individual packages as they wish, because Linux is all about freedom. One method to do this might be through the following site (which I cannot personally vouch for, having never tried it): https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usb-creator
