The Ubuntu Software Center seems to use the same sources.list file as Synaptic and Apt.

I would suggest you test whether you can install the same software using apt-get from a terminal and capturing any error messages or run software-center from a terminal to capture any error messages, then reporting back.

Do you have Multiverse enabled?

Enable multiverse and the problem should be solved.

Synaptic is a front end ( GUI ) for apt.
EDIT : "Ubuntu Software Center" is just another name for 'Synaptic'.
EDIT : See post # 6.

No, it isn't.

They are both GUI APT front-ends, but they're not the same program. Synaptic is more powerful but complex, while Ubuntu Software Center is more newbie-friendly and has features like screenshots, ratings, and reviews.

Go to System > Administration > Software Sources and it will open up a GUI. There will be 5 tick boxes available tick the first 4, the last one is sources and you won't need that unless you intend on pulling applications apart.

For more information read this, actually read it first.

Only thing is we don't know what fixed it so it would be nice if the OP could let us know what he found out.

Sorry, I thought he meant the solution was enabling multiverse.
