Ubuntu Server Install
 

I'm trying to install Ubuntu v8.1 Server. I've been following instructions that I have found online but I am still unable to install. It seems to complete the installation process and goes to reboot. When it comes back up I get a black screen with a single blinking cursor. I am unable to type anything. This is a brand new server with Raid 1+0 on SATA drives. I used the recommended partitions and did not use Software Raid. Any ideas... ?

Does it appear to be booting up - do you see console messages before the screen goes dark? Maybe a video card issue? Is it failing after starting gdm?

If you have a LiveCD, you could boot up and see if there is anything in the log files to give you a clue.

All I get when it boots up, before it goes black, is 'Checking NVRAM...'

I am a complete newbie with linux... but I will try the LiveCD

Go into BIOS and change the stop on memory errors to off or disabled. There may be a problem with your memory compatibility.
