As I already says, by opening a session with "ssh -X", you can't have a gnome-session, but you can run GUI based program like serviconf and so on. To remotely open a gnome (or any other graphical) session, you have to install a remote desktop program.. And then i can't help you.

For the mysqld error Have you done mysql_install_db yet from command line? if not try it as root.

You can also check out italc italc.sourceforge.net its a simple remote tool, this will allow you to use ultravnc (install the windows xp drivers to speed things up) to view your desktop.

If you are having a lot of problems with apache and mysql try lampp (xampp for linux) Or if you just want a web, file, mysql, mail server you can install xampp on windows and not have to hassle with a separate linux server. Even though you don't want to hear the downsides to the gui on a server, there is good reason for it. If you just wanting to use apache and such I'd suggest using xampp instead. Its all gui based and no linux knowledge needed. Otherwise you'll need to get familiar with the command line eventually.

If you're still insisting on having full access to the remote desktop, then you want something like VNC server installed. Have a look here for a quick introduction. There's plenty more howto's on the interweb.

xampp comes with built in admin panels phpmyadmin and a gui for apache and the mail server. It takes no time to setup at all. xampp also has a forum i think its apachefriends.org

xampp has a lot of files it uses in the htdocs dir. it is easier to create a new folder inside for your work like "test".
make sure apache is running then goto http://ip/test/
