Ubuntu server. Gave up waiting for root device

I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 server on old hardware.
The boot seems to have a problem. See the screenshot attached.
When I see that and type "exit" the normal login is displayed.
There was nothing special about the install.
Anyone has an idea how to fix it?

It looks to me like you may have an incorrect UUID. Try typing
ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid
and check the output against the UUID shown in your screenshot.
