Ubuntu server


I recently downloaded and installed Ubuntu 8.10 server 32 bit. I found it a little difficult to use due to the lack of a GUI. I then installed the ubuntu desktop using:
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install ubuntu-desktop
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

This did work, but the question is - Is the installation still a server or has it been converted back into a desktop installation?

If you go to terminal mode and type:
Code:
uname -a
This will display the version of Linux that you are currently running on the machine. Look at the portion that begins 2.6.xx.xx-{server, generic} If your system reports server then you are still running the server kernel. If it reports generic then you are running the desktop kernel.
