even though your linux box doesnt have the internet, is it still connected via LAN to the windows machine?

If so, great, just download the file on windows, stick it in C:\share for example, then right click > share that folder. Then on the linux box open up the file browser and search for that windows PC

failing that, the old cd/USB drive should do the trick

A couple of different directions:

Can you use the the ethernet option for your modem? If so, the driver issue could be a non issue....

you could look into setting up a LAN with a hub or router for your computers

In Linux (Specially the dpkg variety which is Debin/Ubuntu...the place to look is under /etc/network/interfaces. From the main "/" (root folder) find /etc /network is located there.

interfaces is a text file. Here is an applicable snippet of the one my laptop:

iface eth1 inet static
auto eth1
address 192.168.1.50
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1

What the example does for me is it assigns a static IP address.Next, it sets up my network interface to turn on automatically.
The gateway is my router (which could be a modem if I had less computers).
The bolded items are the ones that you will want to change, the rest of the info can be copied and pasted.

The easiest way of editing this file is from the Gnome, just poke around for folders

If I go into the computer with the internet connections (windows xp) and get the internet info from there, can I use it on the Ubuntu computer?

yes --> the networking settings are platform independant

In general terms, the gateway is often ***.***.***.1 I use a 192.168.1.X address for my network. My workstation sits at 192.168.1.150. My gateway is thus 192.168.1.1. That rule is a default not written in stone. It's good to start with the default until your understanding grows.

Does that gateway rule work in your settings for Windows?

Ip address is xx.xx.xxx.xx
subnet mask is xxx.xxx.xxx.x
Gateway is xx.xx.xxx.x
