ubuntu problem
 

I have downloaded ubuntu 12.10 and it has slowed my computer down a whole lot. I am trying to find out how to reinstall linux mint which I do like. But I am not very good on a computer so I ususally mess up more than I help. I would just like help in installing linux mint (mate). Thanks

If you already have the LinuxMint install file then just boot your computer from it and install it from there.
If you dont have the install ISO file yet, you should get it from the Linux Mint web site -----------> http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php

If you dont want to have to re install a whole new system in your computer You could also try a different desktop environment maybe that would take care of the problem. Xfce is said to be light and fast. You can install it from the software center and log in using a different session

Thanks for your try to help. I went to the site you told me to but it never let me do an install. I guess the best thing for me to do is get a windows cd (which I hate) and just go back to windows. I do appreciate you trying to help me though. I can tell you that with Linux mint my computer was much faster and ran much smoother. Thank you

I sent you the link to that site, but you dont install an operating system from a site, you download the ISO file and then burn that file on a DVD and then use that DVD to install the Operating System on your computer.

So what you need to do is go back to the link, select the version you want to download, Mate version or Cinnamon version are fine, then burn that file on a DVD and boot your computer from that DVD.

I have gone to the sites where you sent me the link to and everytime I click the download it keeps going to another place. I have not been able to download to a dvd yet. If you can give me exact directions I would appreciate it very much because I do want to use Linux Mint (mate). I did like it much better. The person that put the ubuntu on my computer has moved and I cant get in touch with him. So if you can help me more I would appreciate it very much.

Aat the site in the link posted, scroll down to Download links on the left. Just below that you will see "MATE", just to the right of the you will see 32-bit and 64-bit. If you don't know the difference, click on 32-bit. That takes you to another page and you scroll down until you find an entry nearest to where you are. In the far right column (the mirrors column), you click on the name of the mirrow and a window opens and you click the option to save the file. When the download is completed, you need to burn the iso file of Mint to a DVD and make sure you select an option to 'burn as image' or it won't work.

Installing Mate
 

Hi Donnier. You say you hate ubuntu because slowed down your computer and therefore you would prefer install LinuxMint with MATE graphical interface. You also mentined that another person did the actual installation.

So I have a question and a suggestion for you.
The question is do you have full administrative rights to the computer? are you able to install, remove and edit applications in the computer? If you can edit and install applications in your computer here is my suggestion.

Why no install MATE in Ubuntu? I am guessing the reason why your computer slowed down is because the default graphical interface in Ubuntu uses a good amount of resources in your computer. You didnt mention the model and maker of your computer but the Graphical interface is makin your applications take longer to load.

So if you install mate perhaps that will speed up a little more and perhaps improve perfomance.

Here are the steps to install MATE in your computer
Open up a terminal and type
type your password when prompted and hit enter the program will ask you if you want to proceed hit enter to confirm if you are asked
then once is done running type
type your password if asked and hit enter, let it run until is done
then type
and type your password if asked, again let it run until is done

log out of your computer and log back in but at the login screen click on the round bottom next to your user name (See attached picture) and selec mate there then proceed with your session.

I am the administrator of this computer. But i dont know what you mean by open a terminal. I am not very good on a computer. That is why my friend that no longer lives here updated my computer for me.

A terminal is a command prompt where you can type commands and the computer will behave based on what you type there.
To open it you need to press the 'windows key' and the 'Tab key' at the same time, then a search field will appear type there terminal and the icon for the terminal will appear, click on the icon and copy and paste the commands I suggested you in my previous post.

Mint and Ubuntu are essentially the same thing. You can install any desktop environment you want in Ubuntu, including Mate. I'm not sure why Ubuntu would be "slow", unless your computer is very old or has little memory. I run Ubuntu 12.10 on a 7 year old laptop, and it's plenty fast.

Other methods to open a terminal in Ubuntu, click the dash home icon (the ubuntu logo in the extreme upper left of the Desktop), a transparent window opens and there is a search box. Just type: terminal and hit the enter key. You can also open a terminal by simultaneously holding down the Ctrl+Alt+t keys. The latter method will also work on Mint.

ok. I tried the first part of this and when it ask for my password it will not let me type it. So what do I do now?

You do know that in the *nix terminal, the passwd is never shown, not even as a row of '****', for security purposes.
Just type (carefully) your passwd, finished by <Enter> and you should be fine

The white box does not even move and when I hit enter it says invalid password. It is the same password I use all the time. I guess I am just at a standstill. Thanks for all the efforts from everyone.
