i installed ubuntu on the laptop, it wont recognize the ethernet port or usb for internet. i am sure the image is good as i have had no probs on other comp.on install i had to do this on safe screen then after install use fn+f7 to get full screen, and that seems to be the only other prob.

Post the output of the command 'lspci' ( as root ). Once a card is added, you will need to configure it. What have you done to configure your hardware?

i have done nothing, ubuntu has been trouble free on newer computers. this computer is ubuntu. the c800 though doesnt do anything right. i havent done any real computer work since high school with an apple iie, so i willl need to be led along like a child. i can get to manual config and thought i was doing right but was told it is not a pppoe connection, and it is not "seeing" the ethernet connection. i tried rebooting still does not.

O.K. I'm going to assume you have little, if any experience with linux. If I go to too much detail, let me know. When helping remotely, it is hard to know what you know, or don't know. More detail, I hope does not confuse. Advise if it does.

I need to know what card hardware you are trying to get working. To find this out, open a bash command prompt, use 'sudo' to prefix root commands. You will need the root password set when you installed. So, to display the hardware information, from a bash command prompt, run the command 'sudo lspci' ( all commands without the quotes, I put the quotes there, just use what is between the quotes. Copy the output, and paste it in the your reply. This should give me some idea of the hardware you are using. You said you have an ethernet connection on USB port. I will need you to run the command 'sudo lsusb' also, cut and paste the results.

Please tell me which port you want working first. Usually hardwired ports are the easy ones. If you have a wireless port, you need information about the wireless access point you are going through. Please describe the other hardware you are connecting the ethernet port to. Is it a router, or is it a modem. Please state the make and model of what ever it is.

PPPoE is a protocol that runs over an ethernet connection. Some ISP's need to send and receive in PPP protocol. If you have a router, they usually look after the PPPoE stuff to and from your ISP. If you don't have a router, then you may need to install the PPPoE software on Ubuntu, to look after that requirement. Right now, I don't know enough about your configuration to say.

Post back the information I have asked for, we'll go from there.

ok this is what i have

02:03.0 communication controller: winmodem 56k
00:1f.2 intel corporation 82801ba/bam usb controller #1 (rev 03)

now if it will find this stuff, why isnt it automatically enabled?
i have tried to figure out how to enable these devices but,?

camorri 10-24-2008 06:47 PM

The first line looks like a winmodem. These devices are difficult to get working in linux. It is a modem, that needs windows code to operate as a modem. Modems are used over telephone lines.

This is not your ethernet port.

The second line appears to be a USB controller. Most systems have one or more.

What I need you to do, is open a konsole, so you can enter some commands. I want you to enter the command 'lspci' without the quotes, just the letters. Here is what it looks like on my system.

Quote:

lspci
00:00.0 RAM memory: nVidia Corporation MCP61 Memory Controller (rev a1)
00:01.0 ISA bridge: nVidia Corporation MCP61 LPC Bridge (rev a2)

00:08.0 IDE interface: nVidia Corporation MCP61 SATA Controller (rev a2)

00:18.1 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] Address Map

00:18.3 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] Miscellaneous Control
I simply cut and pasted the output from the konsole to this thread. You can see I have an nVidia ethernet hardware. Once I know what hardware you have, then I'll have a look to find out what driver to load.

You can display what drivers are loaded with the command '/sbin/lsmod'. The list may be long. Once again, commands are entered without quotes.

It could be Ubuntu did not detect the hardware you have, or does not have the correct driver. It is possible it did detect the hardware, loaded the driver, and it is simply not configured. Right now I can't say which. The commands I asked you to run should start to shed some light on the problem.

If you have devices plugged into USB posts on your system, run the command 'lsusb' and if the devices are detectd, you will get a list of the device(s).

k, i did these things you ask. remember, as i cant get this computer online i cannot "cut and paste" what i can gice you is-
the usbrecognizes the "zoom" wireless usb device, but how do i drive it? it recognizes the zoom product disk, but how to install?

the ethernet port and modem appear as same card visually, i see nothing in the drvers that indicates to me a driver for this.

bnsimanton 10-30-2008 09:30 AM

ok, i dual booted xp on here and it recognizes the modem, no lan (eth) and i can drive my zoom wireless usb. i will try to download wine or a version and go that way. if you get something else let me know. thanks!!

As the kernel starts booting, you should notice that the internal miniPCI 10/100 NIC card has been detected as eth0. If your C800 laptop has the 3Com internal miniPCI combo (like mine), you will notice the kernel's 3c59x.c driver has been loaded for the NIC.
both of these links are to Dell Latitude C800 laptops

So we do need to see the output from YOUR laptop, in order to assist.
