Ubuntu not starting up

Kinda weird problem.. As I try to start Ubuntu all goes well until login scren - I enter login name, password, then press enter and wait until Gnome loads but it doesnt - instead of loading to the desktop it gives me again login screen but then with wrong resolution. and so I can login all day long.
But the most interesting is that this thingie happens to my friend too (same Ubuntu). Can anyone explain where's the problem?

You might try
Ctrl F6
to drop to a login prompt, login and then do

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg (if you're using hoary)
or
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 (if you're using warty)

Once you've worked your way through that and it's saved and exited,
Ctrl F7
to take you back to the login screen.
Try logging in.

now I was thinking what i was doing last before restarting/shutting down ubuntu and i remember i was "installing" cedega ( tar -zvxf cedega.tgz ) - could it be that cedega made ubuntu not starting up? If yes then how can i remove cedega's installation?
