Ubuntu not properly detecting any of my laptop's built devices (HP DV4000)
Hello. First of all I apologize if my post is in poor format. This is my first ever post.
From what I can tell Ubuntu seems to be detecting things like my: Video Card Sound Card Wireless (not working have tried downloading the suggested packages for the broadcom wireless card to no avail) All of these and possibly others seem to be detected as generic. I have sound and my display is ok. But I am lacking tv out functionality. My evidence of my devices being detected at generic is my xorg.conf file (which I generated using some steps in another forum): Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "X.org Configured" Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0 InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer" InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard" EndSection Section "Files" ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/misc" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/cyrillic" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/100dpi/:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi/:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/100dpi" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi" FontPath "/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType" FontPath "built-ins" EndSection Section "Module" Load "extmod" Load "dri2" Load "record" Load "glx" Load "dri" Load "dbe" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Keyboard0" Driver "kbd" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse0" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "auto" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5 6 7" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Monitor0" VendorName "Monitor Vendor" ModelName "Monitor Model" EndSection Section "Device" ### Available Driver options are:- ### Values: <i>: integer, <f>: float, <bool>: "True"/"False", ### <string>: "String", <freq>: "<f> Hz/kHz/MHz", ### <percent>: "<f>%" ### [arg]: arg optional #Option "NoAccel" # [<bool>] #Option "SWcursor" # [<bool>] #Option "ColorKey" # <i> #Option "CacheLines" # <i> #Option "Dac6Bit" # [<bool>] #Option "DRI" # [<bool>] #Option "NoDDC" # [<bool>] #Option "ShowCache" # [<bool>] #Option "XvMCSurfaces" # <i> #Option "PageFlip" # [<bool>] Identifier "Card0" Driver "intel" BusID "PCI:0:2:0" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen0" Device "Card0" Monitor "Monitor0" SubSection "Display" Viewport 0 0 Depth 1 EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Viewport 0 0 Depth 4 EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Viewport 0 0 Depth 8 EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Viewport 0 0 Depth 15 EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Viewport 0 0 Depth 16 EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Viewport 0 0 Depth 24 EndSubSection EndSection A little information about my setup. I am running Ubuntu 10.10 and it was installed using wubi on a partition that also has some windows programs. I know that some programs are able to see the devices properly on Ubuntu as I downloaded a package called Sysinfo which is able to identify my video card as i915 and wireless card as the proper broadcom model. As far as steps to take I am not very familiar with Ubuntu programs but have learned a little about using terminal and should be able to follow whatever steps are advised. Thank you very very much for all your help. P.S. - I am prepared to reformat the entire hard drive and install Ubuntu on a fresh partition but this would be a rather large undertaking so I would prefer to find an alternate solution or at least try other steps before resorting to this step. ;) P.P.S. - I have posted a couple other things from my system at the end here I am not sure if it is relevant but was requested in resolving the Broadcom Wireless card issue in another post. sarah@ubuntu:~$ lsmod Module Size Used by binfmt_misc 6599 1 parport_pc 26058 0 ppdev 5556 0 snd_intel8x0 25664 2 snd_ac97_codec 99227 1 snd_intel8x0 ac97_bus 1014 1 snd_ac97_codec snd_pcm 71475 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec snd_seq_midi 4588 0 snd_rawmidi 17783 1 snd_seq_midi joydev 8767 0 snd_seq_midi_event 6047 1 snd_seq_midi i915 295243 4 snd_seq 47174 2 snd_seq_midi,snd_seq_midi_event snd_timer 19067 2 snd_pcm,snd_seq drm_kms_helper 30200 1 i915 snd_seq_device 5744 3 snd_seq_midi,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq pcmcia 35973 0 drm 168092 4 i915,drm_kms_helper snd 49038 11 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq,snd_timer,snd_seq_device yenta_socket 21518 0 soundcore 880 1 snd pcmcia_rsrc 10566 1 yenta_socket intel_agp 26566 2 i915 snd_page_alloc 7120 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm i2c_algo_bit 5168 1 i915 pcmcia_core 14657 3 pcmcia,yenta_socket,pcmcia_rsrc agpgart 32011 2 drm,intel_agp psmouse 59033 0 video 18712 1 i915 output 1883 1 video serio_raw 4022 0 lp 7342 0 hp_wmi 5223 0 parport 31492 3 parport_pc,ppdev,lp 8139too 19581 0 8139cp 16934 0 mii 4425 2 8139too,8139cp sarah@ubuntu:~$ sudo iwconfig [sudo] password for sarah: lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. sarah@ubuntu:~$ lspci | grep -i net 06:05.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02) 06:07.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Hello,
You should post the results of your command using [CODE] [/ CODE] (without a space between the / and CODE). it would be easier to read. (also I prefer Code:
lsmod | sort About your wireless problem, I see that you have the BCM4318, did you try the procedure explained here : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wi...0b43%20drivers About your video card, what exactly is your problem? if you want some help on that, you should post the result of Code:
lspci | grep VGA Cheers. |
Hi annihilation_ca, Welcome to LQ. It sounds like you're asking for help with your wireless? Your lspci output tells us you have the bcm4318 chip and this requires the b43 driver and firmware. There is more here:
http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43 Good luck. ;-) |
Ok, thanks very much for the replies. I appreciate both the links you folks have given. Those exact solutions did not work for me but I was able to get my wifi card working using the following 2 links describing the Ndiswrapper method, in case anyone else using an HP Pavilion dv4000 can potentially benefit:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wi...er/Ndiswrapper https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wi...oad/Extraction when I had to choose which sys and inf files I used: bcmwl5 I greatly appreciate the help once again. I think now that my problem is exclusively getting my video card's tv-out functionality working I will post a separate topic and mark this post as solved. :) |
Glad you got it sorted!
