Ubuntu newb: How do I get my wireless connection working with Ubuntu?

Hello,

I am a new user here, reccomended to this site by a friend. I am trying to learn linux and was reccomended Ubuntu 7.10. I need help getting my wireless internet to work with my Ubuntu. Do I need to install drivers? How do I check this?

Please help.

P.S.
If anyone could help relate ubuntu to windows in anyway possible, that would maybe help me understand much faster, for I grew up in Windows (unfortunately).

Thankyou!

www.google.com/linux is your friend when you need Linux-related information. I used that site, and search for 'ubuntu wireless', and got these on the first of many pages.

little more info what type of wireles card and you have to make sure linux is loading it.
then from there it will be easy type in a terminal type dmesg and also lspci. if it is a usb lsusb

Thankyou guys, please be patient with me, I have a busy schedule so I can't always throw my ubuntu experimenting in there. Still trying to connect wirelessly. I can connect wired and messed with all possible wireless switches. Still trying.

This thread won't expire will it?

devilgates 02-15-2008 07:04 PM

I am messing with this again today. Have some time set aside today to actually mess with it more ^_^.

Drakeo 02-17-2008 10:21 AM

ok you need to open a terminal and type dmesg then copy that and post it so I can see your error messages then I want you to also type lspci -n and then copy and past that and post it so I can see what card you are using and chip on the card then when we know that we will get your ubuntu up dated plus please try to the new fw-cutter and new frimware . if not there is a ndiswrapper for it and we will actually use the windows drivers that came with it. they are not as good but for just connecting there ok.

okay it is just 2k over the limit so I am going to post it in sections.

52.249576] bcm43xx: Error: Microcode "bcm43xx_microcode5.fw" not
available or load failed. This is the problem you have the same chip as mine and this is going to be to much fun. but I also checked your kernel and yours should support it. there are three ways to get it to work . that is just to get the device to work then we will try and conect.
the reason it dosnt work it says it needs the firmware."bcm43xx_microcode5.fw" <--- in order to get the firm ware you have to down load the the program that extracts it from the firmware file it is call b43-fwcutter. the other way is to use your windows drivers from the cd how ?
well you need to go go here.http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/joomla/ and download it and make and make install STOP. I am prety sure if you are running yum if you go in to you yum and configure the wirles card it will ask you to use the bcm43xx module or the ndiswrapper. you click
nidiswrapper it asks you where the file is you can take the inf file from the disk. or do like iI did i mad a file in the /etc/ and named it ndiswrapper and put all the contents of it in there it is going to use the wmp27 or what ever inf file and the sys file that goes with it. if youm does not have the ndis wrapper option then you will have to untar the file and do a make and make instal. the ndiwrapper drivers work ok there good for just connecting.
the best way is this.

best way is to extract the firmware and install to the /lib/firmware file. But I also could see you are using the amd or x64 cpu. this is the big problem also if it works with your windows driver I would go with the ndiswraper. because not until the 2.6.24 kernels did they put the drivers in the kernel for the bcm43xx. why linkeys and the other million company use this bcm43xx chip but broadcom refuses to give us the source to write are own drivers you can thank microsoft for that. there is about 5 different chip companies that work hard with linux for the linux market. it is not the company that makes the card it is the chip maker. the companies just buy the chips and build the card. so you can have a bcm43xx on a bunch of cards.
now when you use the ndiswrapper you will open a terminal after you put the drivers /etc/ndiswraper that is where the ndiswrapper program looks. you will type ndiswrapper -l and it will list your drivers. then you will type ndiswrapper -i and it will install it. mine was
ndiswrapper -i WMP11v27.inf then after that all you need to do is modprobe ndiswrapper..
I know this sounds like alot but if you knew linux it would be about 20 minutes worth of reading. 10 minutes of playing with it. the 5 minutes to configure and get online.
READ this sight close this is how I got mine to work on both ndiswrapper and the linux drive http://bcm43xx.berlios.de/ why would you want to use a linux driver well it can operate in monitor mode and injection mode. and that way you can be a wireless server but you do not need that or want to hack everyones wifi in the neighborhood. lol

I don't have too much free time right now. So could you just send me a step by step post? Remember, I am a linux newb, so most what you said reichocheted through my skull.
