Ubuntu login fails and returns to login

I installed Ubuntu 12.04 last night. This morning, I tried to log in and the screen goes black for a bit (like less than half a second) and then returns to the login screen.

I know I am entering the correct password because it lets me log in on TTY.

I have also tried several solutions to what seems to be a fairly common problem for newbies. I have tried deleting the .Xauthority file after I set myself to own the home directory. Neither worked. There are some solutions with nvidia graphics drivers or something but I have an AMD GPU.

I have tried setting my kdmrc file correctly as suggested in this thread. The kdmrc did not exist so I posted the one that was in the thread linked in the above thread.

Nothing so far has worked. I haven't installed several programs so I could simply reinstall ubuntu but that wouldn't tell me what the problem was if it shows up again in the future.

Thank you.

You can create another user from the TTY session, give it all the same rights and put it in the same groups. Try to log in to the GUI with that user and see what happens.

Here is another thread with similar problem

There is not much point in creating kdmrc unless you're running KDM (and presumably KDE)?

Haha I just read up on what it was. No wonder it didn't exist.

Tron, thanks for your suggestion. I will try this after I get home. Will post whether or not it was solved.
