Ubuntu issues....

Hi guys !
I successfully dualbooted ubuntu in my lappy. Now I am facing some newbie problems.

First thing is that my dongle is not working.I don't have any broadband or wired connection. So I use a micromax MMX353G 3G usb dongle. And it is not working with ubuntu.I tried it in a live dvd, but it didn't work.It has some .exe format stuff. I think that's why it ain't working. So please help me in solving this issue.

The second problem arose due to the first one.As my dongle is not working. So I am not able to install anything at all. So I downloaded software packages like VLC player from softpedia. Now I got the package. It is some .tar file.So can any one say how can I install it manually ?

guys please help.....

So you mean you downloaded that with windows? In any event, I would encourage you to fix the connection problem first. VLC is available in the ubuntu software center (one click installation). Just think you might get overwhelmed trying to bite off more than you can chew so early. Also, and there is a chance that this may not apply to VLC, but there is something you will have to do via the terminal (very easy) to get DVDs to play, so you might as well wait till you get the connection and then proceed on an easier route to begin with. Unfortunately, I can't help with the connection problem, but I am sure someone here can.

heyyo, try giving a bit info about the dongle. In a terminal type "lsusb" and check if the dongle is indeed seen. Additional drivers section of Synaptic Package manager should help you. If not ping back.

Always try and install software from the online repositories(from the package manager). Dependencies will be auto resolved.

EDIT:
Ahh!! I spoke too soon. Google

If you don't get more input here (a more specific title would help) don't be intimidated by the ubuntu forums. It looks huge and impersonal, but post in the "absolute beginners section" and they are usually very nice to newbies (also the "desktop environments" section is full of really nice people even though you have the regular ubuntu, you could still get away with posting there).

Also, I would again really encourage you to wait and install the VLC after you can do it from the software center or any method from the repositories.

There's a thread at askubuntu about this device and Ubuntu. It's for an earlier version of Ubuntu, but it still could be useful.
