Ubuntu installer wont display correctly.

Ive been trying to install ubuntu on an old laptop that no longer has an optical drive, I got a tutorial for setting up my own pc as a server and booting through that.

It works fine and I get to a screen asking me if I want to install. When I choose to install I get taken to a screen that clearly isnt displaying properly.I can make out that it is a BIOS style menu but I cant read what the options are, all the characters are strange boxes and skewed at a weird angle.

If I press up or down I can see a red block move up and down, Im guessing this means the installer works, it just wont display properly on the laptop.

The laptop is an Acer Aspire 1350 with an AMD processor.

Any ideas at all would be greatly appreciated.

At the Ubuntu boot menu, hit F4, and pick smaller resolution a , i.e. 800 x 600 x 16

Hope this helps.
