Ubuntu has just stopped recognizing Walkman MP3 player

Is there a manual route for mounting a USB mass storage device, I'm wondering?

This is an MP3 player that worked effortlessly the first time I plugged it in... but that was Ubuntu 9.04. Now, since upgrading to 11.10, (a couple of weeks ago) the automatic mounting has got progressively more and more temperamental. At first, I was getting occasional instances of the OS seeing it, but being unable to mount it, with error reports such as "Error stating file '/media/WALKMAN' no such file of directory" -- and helpful hints about checking my speling... sigh! (i.e. it wasn't me that did the speling in the first place, it read it straight off the device)

Within the last couple of days, it's usually worked on the second or third attempt at plugging it in, but today I'm getting no joy at all. Forgive me for being a newbie, but the extent of my expertise is trying lsusb, which does seem to tell me that the OS at least knows the player is there, because I get a line reading

Bus 001 Device 086: ID 054c:04be Sony Corp.

... but that's as far as I go! Ideas? TIA

Have you double checked your system's automount settings? Also, if this is an issue, just manually mount it, using the "mount" command. Note, that if you manually mount it, you will need to create a new directory to mount it to. What file systems are partitioned on it?

Thanks for this so far...

Just at the moment, it's working again, so it's going to be difficult to diagnose! Responding to your questions... no I haven't checked automount settings (wouldn't know know to) but the fact that other MP3 players automount every time (and this one has been automounting ok until now) makes me think it's not settings that are the issue -- I think there's something player-specific that the latest Ubuntu doesn't like. Mystifying! File system on there is MSDOS -- that's all that comes up in "properties"; is there a command which would tell me anything more specific? I'm guessing it's FAT16?

Also, if I'm going mount manually, I need a bit of hand-holding, please. I figured out for myself that I'm going to have to mkdir a WALKMAN directory inside /media ... but how do I tell the OS what it is I'm mounting and which USB plug it's on? Give it the device number as listed by lsusb, maybe? (mount /dev/??? /media/WALKMAN)

The other option I'm prepared to try is just re-formatting the whole thing, but if I can't tell what the OS thinks it is, then a command like mkfs.vfat -F 16 -I /dev/??? might be a bit dangerous!!!! (Also, would it need to be bootable?)

Thank you for your patience...
