Of course I find this out after my computer has arrived, but I'm reading about some severe problems people are encountering in using Ubuntu with a GEFORCE 8600GT card (specifically: SPARKLE GEFORCE 8600GT 512MB PCI-E)
Has anyone experienced a similar problem?
If so, has anyone found a solution?
If not, is a different distro recommended such that it can function with my video card?
I am going to work off the Live CD tonight and see if my hardware is compatible, but I fear getting a black screen...
Distribution: Switched to regualr Ubuntu, because I don't like KDE4, at all. Looks like vista on crack.....

I'm afraid I don't know anything about your hardware, but if I was installing, with that new hardware, I would start out with a fresh install, with no 3D drivers, just the safe and non-3d but otherwise working video drivers. Vesa or nv. Then download the latest drivers from Nvidia, and compile them yourself. I think that's your best chance of getting them to work.

Thank you.
I had to remove the quiet splash options to get it to boot with my 6800 and my 8800GTS.
When the Live CD comes to the boot option screen hi F6 and then remove the quiet and splash option from the command line that displays.
After the install you will need to edit your grub and remove both of those items in your actual system boot as well. After a Kernel upgrade you will again need to repeat the procedure.
I did not have these issues with Fedora or openSUSE.

You are awesome! I've been puzzling over this for days, I was having to boot into single user mode then exit, but now I'm booting nicely. I'm guessing its just the splash that's the problem, quiet is probably ok, but then again, its working, so why mess with it?

I don't remember if I ever tried just removing splash... worth a try when I get a chance. Glad it worked for you... I am still trying to figure out why I can use a splash w/ openSUSE and Fedora, but not Ubuntu.
