Um - is this internal modem perhaps a winmodem?

You need to tell us more though.
What exactly are you doing to get the modem going and what is the result of each step?

Does lspci see your modem? If so, what does it say. (paste the line here.)

Well there you go.
Visit the linmodem project web site and look your modem up.

In general, do not expect winmodems to work well, or at all, under linux. Support is improving all the time.

If this is the intel 536ep or 537ep HaM modem, then there are a number of very long threads about this beastie in LQ. You need the intel driver and a patch and there are still no garantees.

For no headaches - obtain a full hardware serial modem (they are cheap second hand). They work out of the box.
