ubuntu Cannot remember root user password - all online rsources seem to be a dead end
 

a while ago i got locked out of my root account...and after much pain i manage to figure it out but low and behold it has happened again...and i can't for the life of me remember how i did it.
it was very simple and i did it from the xterminal. please help!! The simpler the better

I've only used Ubuntu a few times in passing, but I do remember that there wasn't a password for root or at least whenever I used sudo at the terminal it just worked with no password. Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, Ubuntu locks the root acct by default, so you have to do everything by sudo, unless you unlock the acct.
Normal distros may lock root against ssh (a good thing), but you can always use it from the console ie locally.
