Ubuntu cannot find hard disc on Mac G3 power pc running Debian
 

I already have Ubuntu installed elsewhere, so a Mac with Debian installed is not what I want. I have found a 32 bit Ubuntu 11.04 install .iso and have created a bootable cd. However the install does not work. The install runs until it gets to the 'detect hardware' when I get 'no disk drive detected' and it gives me a list of disk drivers to select from. I have tried a few at random and I just come back to the same page. The only difference is if I select scsi-debug then setup seems to think there is an 8 MB hard drive which rather stalls the process!! Other scsi options just return to same page.

Any suggestions for forward movement?

What version of Ubuntu did you download for it? You should be using the Ubuntu PPC (power PC) version.

I have exactly the same issue, on a powermac G4.

I ended up giving up on ubuntu, and now Im installing mintppc (using the debian businesscard iso)

- yes I did download what was claimed to be the ppc version. and it did run fine through the first half dozen stages OK, which I cannot imagine it would with the wrong version.

- discouraging. However I really don't want to go back to debian or a derivitive. If I have to run a third OS I might as well go back to MAC Tiger.

In the belief that this forum was to try to give people help, I added this post to the ubuntu and debian forums, reasoning that I had to attract people from one or other of these backgrounds to have any possibility of forward movement. Unfortunately unSpawn could not see the sense in this and has deleted these posts. How he or she thinks I am supposed to get help from people with those areas of expertise I don't know, but it is very annoying to be arbitrarily shut off from possible help.

I would still like help from anyone - probably people with debian and / or ubuntu ppc experience.

Have you been successful in the past of booting off of the hard drive? I would double check the connections to the hard drive just to make sure that nothing is disconnected. Almost seems like either it is not fully detecting it due to either being a different file system, or a hardware issue.

And as far as your other threads go, "unSpawn" closed them because it is kind of pointless to have the same thread posted in different subforums. Think of it as if you have multiple threads of the same thing, you have all of these people assisting you at different levels, and one thread might have information that another thread needs.

The hard drive is fine. In-between attempts to boot from the install cd, I boot debian from the hd without a problem. debian also has no trouble reading and writing to the hard drive.
