Ubuntu, can't detect USB devices
Hi, I've just migrated from Windows Xp to Ubuntu 9.04. But Ubuntu won't detect the any of my USB devices which XP could detect. After looking on Google I haven't been able to find a solution.
Motherboard: Vendor: Phoenix Technologies, LTD Version: 6.00 PG Release Date: 07/28/2005 Address: 0xE0000 Runtime Size: 128 kB ROM Size: 512 kB Characteristics: PCI is supported PNP is supported APM is supported BIOS is upgradeable BIOS shadowing is allowed Boot from CD is supported Selectable boot is supported BIOS ROM is socketed EDD is supported 'lsusb' does not show any USB devices. Cheers for any help here. |
here's what you can do :
check /var/log/messages for any errors with usb during boot try unloading - loading the usb module (i dont know its name - try modprobe -l to find the name) and ... get the exact name of your motherboard and google together with usb or no usb or something |
Thanks. I looked for any error messages and there are none. When looking at lsmod I can't find any USB modules, so could this be a problem with the install? Is it possible to load the USB modules without reinstalling from scratch?

Hi Q
look at this link http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ount+usb+drive this person was having the same problem and it seems to have solved his issue Vanessa |
the name of the module is ohci-hcd
try removing - adding and see with dmesg what it says it should look something like this : <code> ohci_hcd 0000:00:07.4: remove, state 1 usb usb1: USB disconnect, address 1 usb 1-2: USB disconnect, address 2 ohci_hcd 0000:00:07.4: USB bus 1 deregistered ohci_hcd 0000:00:07.4: PCI INT D disabled ohci_hcd: USB 1.1 'Open' Host Controller (OHCI) Driver ohci_hcd 0000:00:07.4: PCI INT D -> Link[LNKD] -> GSI 10 (level, low) -> IRQ 10 ohci_hcd 0000:00:07.4: OHCI Host Controller ohci_hcd 0000:00:07.4: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 1 ohci_hcd 0000:00:07.4: irq 10, io mem 0xeffff000 usb usb1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice hub 1-0:1.0: USB hub found hub 1-0:1.0: 4 ports detected usb 1-2: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 2 usb 1-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice usb 1-2: reset full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address </code> ofcourse i am assuming you are having problems with more then just an usb-stick not showing up as you said none of your usb devices work (tried a mouse?) bonne chance |
Hi, I've just got back to the computer now after the weekend, so I'm gonna have a look at this now, thanks for the advice.

Hi, again. I successfully removed the USB module using the 'rmmod' command. However I'm having trouble find the module to reinstall it it with as I can't get to the module through the terminal, I get a 'no such file or directory' when I try
'cd lib/modules/2.6.28-6-386/kernal/drivers/usb' even though the file system shows these files. It thinks its the 'kernal' doc thats not letting me through. I was following this http://articles.techrepublic.com.com...1-5031591.html tutorial. Am I doing the right thing here? cheers. |
