Ubuntu and wireless.

Hello all. I am new to linux and was wondering if you could help me. I am running a compaq presario 2200 laptop and ubuntu (the distro I chose)I was trying to get it to accept my wireless card. I have tried everything I know (not much) I came here and read the article on installing .tgz files that is stuck in the general section.
I have the package I need to install for ubuntu to accept my drivers. ipw2200-1.1.1 (I hope I make sence). anyway when I try to do
Code:

$ tar xvf ipw2200-1.1.1.tgz
I get a error. Like I said I am new to linux, I hope I made sence and didnt sound like a total n00b. Any help would be appreciated.

You are missing one of the key tags in your tar command. It should start out
Code:

tar zxvf
The z modifier tells tar that you want to unpack a gzip compressed file. If a file ends in .bz2 then replace the z with a j. The x is extract, v is be verbose (report everything done), and the f tells it to use the file from standard input.

In the future, please post the exact error messages. They can help us to help you. Just saying "errors" is somewhat akin to going to the doctor and saying, "I hurt", and leaving it at that!

Peace,
JimBass
