Ubuntu and not a broken black screen

The question I have has to do with what happens after my hp deastop is turned on. What I am about to describe is true for me whether I am booting Ubuntu 14.01 or 15.10. In both cases I installed from a live USB stick. If I boot to the USB stick I will see a screen with the name of the distribution and a bar of dots illuminating one at a time. This seems to indicate that progress is being made towards opening the desktop screen. I do not know what this screen is call in the world of Linux.

Once I have installed the operating system off the live USB stick. I set up the installation so I need not sign in using a password to open Ubuntu. I have my password connect to my HP BOIS power supply. Once I sign into the starting process all I see is a black screen for a minute or so. I would like to install some kind of action screen showing me that something is happening. Could someone please instruct me or direct me to software (deb file) that can help me with this.

Hi...

I don't think anything like that exists. My Lubuntu install does the same thing, although it's not for a minute or two. It's just how Ubuntu (or Linux) loads up, although the graphics driver may have something to do with it, especially with Nvidia's proprietary driver.

Years ago, most, if not all, distributions gave you a "running" DOS screen that informed of what was going on as the the system booted up, however, that has been replaced (for the most part) with "splash screens" that, as you know, don't always stay on the screen.

One can bring back the old DOS like boot screen on Ubuntu using the instructions here. However, it's far from pretty.

Regards...

ardvark71.

Oh! Man, I am disappointed to read this. I would think that with hundreds of millions of people using Linux someone would have worked on this. Oh well &**&$%

It's hard to know where you are going wrong Don. Do you know what graphics card you are using? Does Ubuntu eventually show the desktop? When I see 'HP' it usually means "Radeon", which i've had problems with in the past.
1. Re-install Ubuntu with usb stick.
2. Make sure you have an internet connection when installing and be sure to click "install updates while installing". This fixes Radeon problems with HP laptops that boot to a blackscreen in Ubuntu LTS and 15.04. (might help)
3. Make sure you click the 'require my password to login'. (You can change it later, but it might help with a solution)

regards.

On my HP s3707c (onboard Nvidia graphics, which may be relevant), if I hit the Escape key once the screen goes black, I get a text screen showing me what's happening. Once the system is ready for me to login, the graphics display pops up automagically so I can login.
