Did Ubuntu ever work on this machine? How did you install, USB? Are you trying to dual-boot, get Ubuntu working, or put Windows back on it?

You will need a USB CD/DVD drive to reinstall Windows, but you should be able to fix Ubuntu (or just reinstall it) however you managed to start the installer originally.

It sounds as if the attempt to reinstall Windows got far enough to wipe out your Ubuntu boot loader.

An alternative to using a USB stick is this: If you have or can borrow a external USB CD/DVD drive, you should be able to boot to a CD on the external drive.

This may require going into the BIOS to change the boot order--watch for a message during the memory check. My Dells display something like "Press F# for the boot menu/Press F# to enter Setup." The Dell boot menu includes a choice to "boot from CD/DVD" that works with an external USB drive.
