Cannot help you, but my experience, though: Upgrades mosltly give some mysterious behaviour of the upgraded system, especially if you have customised a lot. Better take a copy of the home dir (+ others you choose) and install fresh. Then copy configurations (dot files) from the copy into the new and install corresponding program(s), selectively. And your system will have minimum of anomalies and garbage!

I agree, but what I do is to mount the /home directory from a separate partition, so when I install the new system my data, settings etc are not touched & things carry on as before. If you are changing to a new distro or making other major changes it may be easier to create a new user name & just copy you data from the old one.

If your system is seriously unusable, create a puppy linux CD on another computer & boot up with it as a recovery system. You will be able to backup files, create DVDS or whatever ready for reinstalling.
