Ubuntu 9.10 Installation Issues

Hello All,

I have an older Dell 3ghz 32 single core intel, 512mb ram, integrated sound/nic. Each time I attempt to install any distribution of linux LinuxMint/Suse/Ubuntu the installation freezes at various points anywhere from setting the keyboard layout to half way through installing the files. I can install Windows XP fine and I did the memory check feature with Ubuntu (with no errors). It is a Dell Dimension 8200.

Additionally, I can install my Ubuntu 9.10 disc fine on the same machine using VirtualBox. I have the boot order to boot the CD first & HD second.

I hope this is enough information if not please let me know.

Any assistance would be appreciated, thank you.

andthedeviltoo, what about live-cd's? Do they work fine?
And also, if no "ordinary" distribution works for you, I suggest trying gentoo. I also have a PC, on which any Linux distribution doesn't work out of the box. So my choice is gentoo, I can configure it's kernel during the installation and in such a way avoid different problems.

Thank you for your reply. I have tried Gentoo on other systems and I like it although the install is cumbersome (or it was when I installed it a few years ago).

To answer your question it does load with the Live-CD just fine and it works through virtualization too. I may give Slackware or some other no bells & whistles distro a try but I would like to get Ubuntu on this machine simply because I like it.

Had the same problem with a Dell 2 years ago. The Ubuntu Live CD would always hang. Downloaded the Alternate CD and it installed perfectly. The Alternate takes a bit longer, for me at least but worth the time. Hope it works for you.
Later!
