A bit more info is required. What sound card do you have? Are you running Alsa or Pulse audio? Have you installed a driver for your card?
cheers,

That's interesting. Do you have alsa-tools and alsa-utils installed? Try "sudo apt-get install alsa-tools alsa-utils alsa-oss", and then try running alsaconf.

Google is your friend. Linuxquestions is your best friend. Get into the habit of doing a search on this site and odds are you'll find a solution or at least some help in moving towards a solution.
