Unhappy Ubuntu

Hi, I've been a linux user for about 3 years. I was introduced to it whilst doing my Cert 1V in ITC

Lately I have moved house and was reintroduced to adsl, as I have been using wireless with a windows computer.

Excitedly I hooked up the linux computer that I haven't used for a while as bigpond wireless is not compatible with linux and wow, my computer world opened up again.

It lasted for one week and now the magic has disappeared and my linux..ubuntu wont shut down properly. I've reinstalled ubuntu and am still having the problem. I'm also being told to put my browser online, which it is and the internet connection is saying it's connected 100mps.

Any suggestions?

Hello and Welcome to LinuxQuestions,

Strange that it worked for a week and then all of a sudden stopped working. Can you put output of the following commands executed in a terminal:
Code:
sudo ifconfig
sudo cat /etc/resolv.conf
sudo route
Kind regards,

Eric

Hi Lexi-Jane

I'm doing my Cert IV and they have discouraged me from using Linux so I'm amazed that your introduction to it was while you were doing the same course. Anyway that doesn't help with your problem.

Unfortunately your description of what has occurred isn't all that clear so what I am about to suggest is purely based on my experience for getting Ubuntu to connect to the net. If that works for you great, if it doesn't we are going to have to work through it methodically.

OK, I want you to read this post and follow the procedure outlined in it. Basically what it will do is reset your DNS. I know from experience that Ubuntu doesn't automatically connect in Australia, hasn't since 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon), and this little hack helps.

Let us know how you go.

Thank you both very much for your help. To Mark, one of the teachers at Productivity Partners where I did the Cert 4 was into linux big time, Robert Dwight and he convinced me to give it a go. I'm really glad I did as it has made me more savvy and I love it,
Thanks guys for your help.
Cheers,
lexi
