ubuntu 8.10 upgrading from 8.04

I have just upgraded to ubuntu 8.10 from 8.04 and so far it seems
to have been a bit of a disaster for me.
after the upgrade I now cannot get the audio to work (skype sound is okay)
before I had mplayer working for using the radio and various music players and although all show up as installed there not working, the floppy drive is the same it shows as installed but is not showing in the computer box with the hardive and the dvdI also seem to have lost most of the fonts on open office (steve domestic manners etc.).
it could of course just me being stupid and missing something obvious but any suggestions would help.

8.04 was officially released 8.04 (2008 April) 8.10 will be officially released 8.10 (2008 October). IT'S BUGGY!

So you choose to run (upgrade ??? - wtf) alpha code, and then wonder why things break ???.
Report probs with alpha/beta code direct to the devs.

There is not turning back, I'm afraid. Alphas should be intalled in a separate partition and purely for testing purposes.

Not necessarily true. During the testing for Hardy I had my system trashed regularly - out of frustration I tried a clean re-install of Gutsy over the top of the Hardy partition. Worked a treat; even at the Alpha stage - everything still worked (principally email was my concern on that system).
However, I have /home mounted on a separate partition, and I am pretty anal about backups. If it all went to hell, I could always recover.

Given what a piece of crap Hardy was, I haven't bothered testing this release - yet.
