Cool Ubuntu 8.10 doesnt remember my settings after reboot

I installed Ubuntu 8.10 from within Windows and am new to Linux. I'm stuck trying to get my dark theme to stay, it reverts back to default after every reboot.
Could it be I need to install on its own partition?

What is it?

Dark theme is exactly what, a boot splash, a desktop background?

If Ubuntu boots and runs, questions of partitions should be beside the point.
