Ubuntu 8.10 desktop amd64 install issue from windows
Hi all!
I am trying to install ubuntu 8.10 desktop amd64 from within windows but every time the install gets to 100% there's an error message saying it can't read the cd and the only option I have is to retry and then it does it again. I've tried burning the iso to a cd, also tried downloading the iso from another mirror, also tried mounting it in demon tools instead of using the cd but it's always the same. Anybody with an idea? I'm VERY beginner in terms of Linux.
Or tell me how to install this baby from the live cd without destroying the windows boot sector and formatting it. I've specifically created a partition just for ubuntu, but couldn't install onto it.
I'm not really sure what you mean by "trying to install Ubuntu form within windows". Are you using a CD iso image you downloaded and burned to a CD? If you did that, you need to set your BIOS to boot first from the CD not from withing windows.
You download the iso file, burn it as an image at a low speed, and check the md5sum before you try the install.
Thanks Yancek. Just a note: Ubuntu 8.10 lets you start the install from windows. It's a new feature, where you can install/uninstall ubuntu from windows as any other application.
Anyway I just want to get it working, so maybe you can help me how to install ubuntu form the live cd onto a partition that I created just for it. During install I couldn't really figure out how the partition manager works and I don't want to screw up the win boot sector.
I think what you are doing is a 'wubi'install. Never done that and don't intend to. If you want to do a normal installation to a partition, first download the CD and read the instructions on the website on how to do the md5 checksum. Burn the download to a CD "as an image", very important you do this rather than a data cd. Burn at slow speed 8x or lower. Put it in the CD drive after setting the CD drive to first boot priority in the BIOS. The CD should take a few minutes to load into RAM and then you should see a Desktop. There should also be an "install" icon there.
I'm not sure what you didn't understand about partitioning?
You can boot Ubuntu from windows, little more difficult than using Ubuntu's Grub bootloader. What verison of windows do you have, xp? vista?
