Ubuntu 8.04 without sound

Hi everyone!!

I recently installed Ubuntu 8.04 in a Sony Vaio laptop, series T. After installation I tried to watch a movie and I had no video or audio at all. After searching in some forums and installing some codecs I have video but no audio at all.

I have been fooling around with gnome-alsamixer, nothing seems to be muted and now I could only gewt sound through the headphones, but very very low volume.

Any clue if what is going on?

Thanks in advance.

Has sound cam out of the speakers before under Linux?
What sound device is in that notebook? Use command ' /sbin/lspci -v '

Problem Solved!!!

I found another thread to solve the issue (do not have the link). But what I did is the following:

1.- Open volume control panel
2.- Select edit and preferences
3.- Check external amplifier in volume control preferences dialog if it is not already checked
4.- Close volume control preferences dialog
5.- Select switches tab in volume control window
6.- Uncheck External Amplifier Option
7.- Close Volume Control Window

I do not even know what this instructions do (if someone could explain me it would be great), but now I have sound for DVDs and system sounds.

Thank you very much for your help.

Wow, that's some good info, I'm having sound troubles in 8.10 and I'll have to try that when I get home.
