Ubuntu 8.04 no sound ess 1938 (noob)

Gave up on audigy 2 ls and bought a ESS 1938. Still no sound. (just moved from XP to Ubuntu and sound did work before the move)

So to my eye it appears to be a recognized device.
Any ideas?? My son and I have been banging our heads on the wall for days now.

Sometimes sound is muted by default, so before we blame anything else in the system - open up the sound mixer (double-click on the volume applet in the corner of the screen) and unmute and raise the volume on everything. If that doesn't help - open the preferences in the sound mixer and display all the additional channels and unmute them as well. If that also doesn't help, make sure the mixer is controlling the correct audio device by choosing "change device" from the menus.

Other than that it looks to me like your card is detected and the driver is ok. Check also with a set of headphones if you get sound from the front jack on the computer.

Sorry if I can't help more.

nothing is muted, have to find some headphones to try out. It just doesn't make any sense at all why it's not working.
