Unhappy Ubuntu 8.04 logging issue

I just installed Ubuntu 8.04 and everything went smoothly but when I get the login my username and password, the screen comes back to the same screen asking me for username and password again. This is a loop and I can't login to the system. What have I done wrong or what am I doing wrong. Please help.

Question

Are you sure you are not looking at an 'incorrect username or password' screen ?

I am having the same problem. It's has nothing to do with case sensitive as I have deliberately put in an incorrect password and it shows up as 'login failed'. if I put in the correct password it goes through the motions of logging on then just kicks back to the login screen. I have tried logging in as a different session type but the same happens. I loaded Kubuntu Hardy onto my laptop to see if I would like to go over to Linux but sadly (and I hate to say this) XP is running better.

I know for sure I am typing the username and password correctly. I also went ahad and installed the previos version 7.04 and that works fine. I don't know if I have a bad image of the 8.04. Any suggestions. Thanks.
