Ubuntu 8.04 boot

Hi, im just new to ubuntu. I got it dual boot, vista and ubuntu 8.04. Grub is loading during startup but ubuntu wont load. Vista is working normally. Though I could boot ubuntu through the safe mode option, can anyone help me on this? How can i boot ubuntu right away without going to the safe mode option. I could only see blank screen during boot, no mouse cursor. i hard drive is not reading anything..

thanks,

Hi Mark,
When you boot into Ubuntu "normally" (not in safe mode) and see a blank screen is the screen really blank or are you in a virtual terminal with the option to log in? If it's really blank, then maybe ctl-alt-F1 can get you into a virtual terminal. If the screen is not really blank and you have a login prompt then it means that your X-server failed to start but otherwise you're ok. I'm not sure but I think that if you hit the esc key during bootup you will be able to see the boot messages scrolling down the screen which may give you a hint as to what is amiss. There are a bunch of log files located in /var/log that also may contain clues as to what went wrong. You might check in Xorg.0.log, sys.log, user.log, kern.log to see any problems (you'll have to view them as root or use sudo).

Code:

dmesg
will replay some of the messages that you missed during bootup but will only be useful if you can get to a terminal during the non-safe bootup.

Just a few suggestions.
cheers,
jdk
