Ubuntu 8.04 After Linux Image Update - GRUB error 16 - Can't get in

Note: GRUB error 16

I've been running Ubuntu Hardy for a while while no special problems. Today there was a Linux Image upgrade - reboot required. No problems and the system booted back in and was running normally.

Suddenly noticed icons no showing correctly and the machine was frozen. Rebooted but can't get back in at all.

On reboot, I get approximately this.

GRUB loading, please wait
GRUB 1.5

Error 16
Hangs there.

Tried to get into a command line or something. Can't seem to do it.

I booted and hit ESC which gave me a choice of the kernel or the kernel in recovery mode.

Tried the first and started the splash screen (moving graph showing bootup). It just froze.

Rebooted and tried recovery mode. Got black screen with flashing prompt sign but no prompt ... can't enter anything.

Subsequent reboots, ESC does nothing. Just gets to GRUB loading, etc. and hangs.

Anyone know what I can do?

Try booting from the Ubunutu install CD -- I believe it has a rescue mode on it that might be of some assistance.

Is your HD full? That can stop the boot process...

You can download a rescue CD to pull files from it if you can't get it working and gotta re-install

Or get my new multidistro-toolkit which contains everything you need...

Not at that stage, the bootloader isn't fully loaded.

Run fsck on the boot partition.
Using fdisk, check that the partition type of the boot partition is correct.
Check that /boot/grub/stage2 exists.

Try reinstalling grub using the grub install command:
grub-install --root-directory=/boot /dev/whatever
If your using a live CD etc, change /boot to wherever you have mounted it.
