Ubuntu 7.10 Dual Boot with XP, ubuntu partition deleted, grub 1.5 error 22

Hello all,
I was a Linux virgin until a few weeks ago when i decided to walk towards the light and try out the one and only...
So I installed Ubuntu 7.10 and it worked great. Unfortunately I only have this laptop as of now and it's got a 100 GB HDD, not great for dual boots. I didn't want to get rid of my XP Installation because I'm familiar with Windows so I made two partitions using Partition Magic 8.0. My Windows XP boot started suffering and since I use XP more and ubuntu was more an experimental thing for me I deleted the Linux partition (in one of my more moronic moments I have to admit) and re-extended the XP partition to include the entire HDD...
To my dismay I forgot about the GRUB Loader and now I'm stuck with the somewhat infamous error 22. I've read some of the threads out there and unfortunately I have no boot disk for Windows XP, 2000, or otherwise(laptop didn't come with one) and the system isn't responding past the GRUB Loader error page. This is of course, in some twisted case of irony, me posting on LQ off of the Ubuntu Live CD kernel.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

This might help. I don't use windows so I can't vouch for it.

Download fixmbr - MbrFix tool to repair master boot record

MbrFix is same as fixmbr or fdisk /mbr, but works in any Windows including Windows NT, XP, 2000, 2k
I found it here:
http://www.ambience.sk/fdisk-master-...ilo-fixmbr.php.

You can also search www.google.com/linux, search word fixmbr. You may find other tools.
The one I list above is about 57 mb.

I did some testing a while back on a mbr fix type utility on Knoppix. Worked fine - booted any primary partition marked "active". Windows or Linux.
Hopefully the same one mentioned above.

Thank you for the advice but I can't run any kind of Windows so I don't think I can run the mbrfix utility unless there's one for Linux and I can't find it because I'm stupid.

If you had done the google search I recommended, you could have found this:

You can try super grub live cd to fix your the MBR of your disk.

Thanks for the input everyone.

@BigRigDriver
I tried what you found on http://www.arsgeek.com/?p=3340 but my ubuntu terminal says:
"ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install ms-sys //My Input

//Computer spits out...

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package ms-sys"

Little help? :)

Another quick thing, I don't think I'm going to be able to implement any solution requiring any kind of iso, am I, because I'm using the Ubuntu LiveCD to load this kernel so I can't pop it out and put in a different CD, unless there's a virtual drive solution.

Did you enable "Universal" first as it says in that blog ???.

narchy 03-16-2008 02:49 PM

Ah thanks, I didn't enable Universal. Rather I should say that the repositories didn't update right even though I checked Universal because the internet connection was being screwy...I got ms-sys running and everything fell right in place. Thanks so much for your help everyone. I hope to acquire a better machine soon so that all my Linux related dreams can come true but for now thanks for helping me save another almost-bricked machine from the clutches of my stupidity.

Still getting the error

Hey I've also got this problem where ms-sys package isn't being found and everything has been checked in System Sources.

I'm using the latest xubuntu live cd.

Any suggestions on what to do?
