Unhappy Ubuntu 7.10 doesn't authenticate with sudo -i and not getting GUI

After installing Ubuntu 7.10 (Server edition), I tried getting GUI by downloading packages with wget command, but nothing worked. Also, after few logins, when i again started my comp, after running sudo -i,i got error saying
<comp name> is not in sudoers file. This incident will be reported.
$sendmail:fatal: open /etc/postfix/main.cf : No such file or directory

I can't login as root and cant make any changes.Pls help.

Do you really need server edition? If you installed it on desktop, it is better you use desktop edition.
Server edition will not have GUI and hence you will have problems with it if not all packages are installed.
Ubuntu by default will not have password for root. Do it and then edit sudoers file to allow the users to use sudo command.
And if possible use desktop edition if server is not your necessity.

This problem is because your user is not in the wheel group and so is not allowed to privilege escalation through sudo.

I have not had this problem in the desktop edition though I had to edit the sudoers file in RHEL4.
Try installing the desktop edition and still you have the problems then you can edit the sudoers file.
