I am using kubuntu linux 5.10. My problem is when I connect to Internet with my dial-up modem, sometimes it get disconnected and after that a pppd process remains active which shows "STATUS(STAT) Ds" when I am using the ps -x command. I am unable to kill that process even as root. I have tried "kill -9 pid, kill -15 pid and killall pppd". I have to restart my computer in order to connect again to the Internet. I have tried all the ways to kill the pppd process but unable to do so. I am using linux for almost a year. I think this might be a bug in kubuntu linux. Please Help...

I have heard that processes with "Disk Sleep" status can't be killed without restarting the computer if there parent process is init. Is there any solution to kill the process with "Disk Sleep" status without restarting the computer. Please help...

For future reference: please start a new thread of your own
instead of re-animating a three year dead one.
