Question Ubuntu 16.04 How to view installed programs / apps not using dash ?

Greetings

OK, I tried.

I have searched the resources here and on the web, and in the course of the quest, fortunately discovered " l-shw " which is a great tool. But is there an equivalent or similar terminal command that will display installed programs? And no, "software center" is not reporting all of them correctly.

When I launch the "Dash" I feel as though I may as well just ponder the universe and the real meaning of life. It's a jumble of weird images and colors, seemingly swirling around some unknown vortex energy field, and the content is undiscernible.. Could be my video card or system hardware, but all else works well. Dash?

I just want to know what software is installed.

Thank you for any assistance. Sometimes the answers seem to lie just beyond my grasp, but that's "too far enough".

Regards, -LL-
