Ubuntu 12.04 Internet Access Problem

I have just loaded the 12.04 version of Ubuntu on to a PC as the sole operating system from a CD rom and I want to access the internet.

I have tried to access the internet using a dongle which picks up the signal from my router. I also use this dongle on an XP machine. Could it not be compatible with Linux?

Basically, how do I get on the internet on Ubuntu?

Thanks for your help.

So, is it a USB wireless adapter? Usually Ubuntu is good about auto-detecting and configuring things. What is the output when you run
sudo lspci
sudo lsusb
sudo lsmod
in a terminal?

O.k so what you are saying is that your dongle picks up the signal from your router while you are in a session in Ubuntu, then all you need to do is click on the wireless icon on the panel and select the network to which you want to connect, the it will prompt you to type network password and you will be good to go.

If you connect to your router hard wired then it wont be necessary to type password

Good luck to you.

OK, progress of sorts.

I have now attached the PC running Ubuntu 12.04 to a Windows 7 PC via an ethernet cable. The Windows 7 PC has an internet connection.

The signal icon in Ubuntu is animated and I assumed this meant it was connected to the internet. However, it is not.

When I look into the Network window, it says a wired connection is connecting. But, it never connects.

Any ideas or solutions greatly welcome.

I guess plugging that ethernet cable directly to the router is out of the question? Maybe with that access you could locate some drivers for your dongle. A google search with ubuntu and the wireless adapter's model number might yield exactly what you need. Or you might try making a network bridge on your windows machine to connect its wireless connection with its ethernet. (I've never done this you might also have to enable "internet connection sharing") ANd you probably have to do something to release / renew your IP address on the linux box once the bridge is up.

I have a Linksys adapter and I had to go and find the driver to help.
Once I installed the driver my internet connection worked but I had to set up the network manager and put in the wep key (passphrase)

Find out what manufacturer made your adapter and go to their website to find your driver.

Hope this helps-
