Ubuntu 12.04 GUI - Slowed to a crawl

After a hard drive failure, I reinstalled my OS on a new hard disk. I decided to also reinstall the GUI with Gnome. Things were very slow, like the last install. So I installed the recommended nvidia driver. Now the GUI barely responds. The mouse moves okay, but I seriously have to wait minutes for a menu to even pop up.

I got it running now, just needed ever more driver updates. But seems to work very quickly now.
