Ubuntu 12.04 Extended monitor overlay.

I have had this problem with Ubuntu 11.04 and 12.04. Whenever I plug in an extended monitor to my laptop a little sliver (about 2 mm) of my primary desktop remains on the extended monitor. I've tried the ATi drivers and they are useless. Is there a way to shift or align the desktop in Ubuntu rather than using the monitor settings everytime?
