Ubuntu 11.10 keeps crashing/freezing randomly
 
Dear forummembers,
I have installed ubuntu 11.10 from a USB flashdrive on my computer. Every time when I go into Ubuntu at some point everything totally crashes. The screen goes black for a second and after that it all crashed. I can't use my mouse nor keyboard anymore (therefore pressing Alt Sysreq and entering REISUB isn't usefull). Everything compeletly crashes.

Computer information:
Precessor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40 GHz
RAM: 6,00 GB
System Type: 64-bit Operating system


Linux information:
Installed from USB-flashdrive
Installed Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit

I don't run many processes at once, even just going to my hotmail can crash the system. The crash normally occurst within 5 minutes after logging in.
I can film it and post my Ubuntu experience if that's any helpfull.

It's not a lot to go on yet.

Is Ubuntu 11.10 the only OS on this computer? If yes, was it working fine before? If no, are the other OSes working fine?

It could be a temperature issue. Does it seem to be getting hot? Are the fans OK?

It could be a bad RAM issue - can you run memtest86+ from the GRUB boot screen?

No I have Windows 7 installed on it aswell. I installed Ubuntu 2 days ago and it has been crashing since the moment I installed it.

It's a brand new computer. That can't be the problem.

Did you install via a new physical partition, or did you use wubi? If you're not sure, don't worry.

Can you boot the computer from the USB flash drive (without going through installation) - and does this also crash?
If it doesn't crash, open a terminal and post the output of these commands:

The commands suggested above by SecretCode are three separate commands. You got the partition info with fdisk so run df -Th, hit the enter key for output then enter lspci for the output to post here.

Interesting... did you enable the proprietary AMD video drivers, or has it literally just been locking up/crashing within minutes ever since the first Ubuntu 11.10 boot after installation?

On that HP desktop I believe the integrated intel graphics are disabled if an add-in card such as your RadeonHD 6570 is present. If you're comfortable in doing so, I would try shutting the computer off and temporarily removing the 6570 (thus enabling the integrated graphics) and seeing if Ubuntu 11.10 behaved any better.


For what it's worth I tried 11.10 on a few machines and it wasn't a particularly pleasurable experience. It's pretty bleeding-edge, using the new 3.0 linux kernel, and quite a few pieces of hardware seem to have issues with it.

Your installation looks pretty standard, no obvious things to suspect.

Will you try booting from a live CD / live USB and seeing if it lasts more than 5 minutes?
