Ubuntu 11.04 does not start, shows blank purple screen. Takes several restarts to run

I installed Ubuntu 11.04 from cd onto a 32 bit computer with Windows XP. I over wrote Windows and only have 11.04. It worked well since 11.04 was released. Now on start up get purple screen and no key board. Restart black screen with:
483.4560301] [drm] noveau 0000:01:00'0; GPU lockup-switching to software fbcom.
Restart again black screen with:
[30.136943] BUG:unable to handle kernel null pointer dereference A 0000eF8
Will finally work after several restarts. Update Manager not working. Maybe problem is with Chromium browser which doesn't seem to load right, just blank screen.
I have run repair broken packages, Sudo Apt-Get install-f and Sudo dpkg--configure-a. This is my first thread and I hope I have given you the info you need to help. Thank you.

Ubuntu 11.04 does not start shows purple screen.

I have considered update to 11.10 but was afraid it would exacerbate the problem. If you think this is the answer I will do it. Update Manager does not work.

Is it video card problem ? Do you have a nvidia ? (I see something with noveau, GPU...)

Maybe you could try to append " vga=normal " kernel parameter at bootloader stage ?

That is probably a good thing.

Intermittent problem screams "hardware !!!". Especially that kernel oops (the BUG: ).
From the boot menu select memtest - let it run (at least) overnight.

Will run memtest--see you tommorow. Thanks.

Run Memtest for 12 hours and it shows over 2600 errors. I guess this means replacing RAM in my old desk top (ten years.
