ubuntu 10.4 apt.conf is read only!?

Ok so the main problem is that i can't connect to the outside world using my ubuntu 10.4 lts version because it won't connect to the proxy i want it to run through.

Now i've been browsing through several threads including all kinds of heavenly answers which eventually got me to this tip about inserting:

acquire::http:: proxy "http://usrname: pass@proxy: port
acquire::ftp:: proxy "ftp://usrname: pass@proxy: port
apt.conf file.

I found the file but it turned out to be an empty document saying it was "read only"!?!?

So my question to you is,
What the hell am i supposed to do now!?:banghead:

Do not bump a thread unless you have new information. And doing so after only 7 minutes is particularly silly. First, many people use the "zero reply thread" functionality to find threads that have been unanswered. You've now removed yourself from that list. Second, most people do not just sit around here, constantly refreshing, waiting for new posts to answer. Patience is required.

So, to answer your questions, all system configuration files will be read-only to a normal user. Make sure you are using sudo when you open those files if you need to edit them.
