ubuntu 10.10 no wierless connection with Dell XFRd630 with 1395 WLAN Mini-Card
Hey, I installed ubuntu 10.10 and everything worked fine for two days (and I fell in love with linux) but now I can not connect to a wireless connection. Did I mention I am new to linux and have been working on this problem for a couple of days. My wireless card is 1395 WLAN Mini-Card I think I have the b43 driver installed. I have reinstalled the driver and linux but to no effect.

Hello Demogorgon100, welcome to LQ,
could you please post the output of Code:

If I understood your first post correctly, you have been connected to the wireless network? and now the connection is lost?
The output of iwconfig shows, that your computer is not connected to the wireless network. How did you once connect to the wlan? do you have the SSID (networkname) and the encryptionkey available? Do you know which encryption your network is using? Markus |
first time I installed linux I was able to connect without an issue (once I chose the network punched in the web key and connected) it worked for about two days and then it just would not connect just like now the connections are visible the web key is correct but it keeps on trying but with no effect. I tried re installing the drivers many times and I re installed linux to see if it's going to work like it did the first time but no it did not.
|
I used the standard settings and later I did play around with the settings, erased the the connection settings even un installed and reinstalled the manager but to no avail.
|
Reinstalling will be no solution. Which encryption do you use? wpa2? which which tool did you configure your network? Did you change any programs?
Markus ---------- Post added 15-04-11 at 16:42 ---------- Do you use DHCP? |
Oh and connection works fine in windows, i have dual boot.
|
could you please boot Windows, open the commandshell (Start->execute->"cmd" <ENTER>) and post the output of
Code:
ipconfig /all |
How do I find out about the encryption, I think it is wpa2, but I would rather verify
|
if it is wpa2, you'll need wpa_supplicant to connect. Did you edit the wpa_supplicant.conf file once you connected successful to the network?
Markus |
Ok give me a second
---------- Post added 04-15-11 at 10:49 AM ---------- I did not edit anything no |
You still want me to boot with windows
|
mh, you cannot post your key and ssid here... Do you get any errormessages when you try to connect?
Markus |
Well, with Windows we can see if you are using DHCP and such information (the output of ipconfig /all).
If you know it you may post this information here. Markus |
I'M back in windows, something interesting happened I can not connect wierlessly in windows either, I did last night but not anymore no connections are even recognized

I'm going back to linux
|
If it doesn't work with your Windows either, check if there is a button on the Computer with which you can enable/disable the wireless-adapter (but since it is a pcmcia-card this is probably not the dase) is the card inserted/connected correctly to the computer?
If you have a wireless router, I'd recommend to restart the router! unplug the powerplug of the router, wait a minute and plug it in again, then it will need some minutes until the router and the wireless network is back again. Afterwards try with both Operatingsystems if you can connect. You may use the iwlist command in Linux, look at the manpage Code:
man iwlist Markus |
Ok I do have a switch and I already have tried it a number of times it does work but no change after.
I go back between routers two different connections and I have reset both already. BUt I'll try to turn it off for 60sec and see how that does. yeah no change still searching the command results IWLIST(8) Linux Programmer's Manual IWLIST(8) NAME iwlist - Get more detailed wireless information from a wireless inter‐ face SYNOPSIS iwlist [interface] scanning iwlist [interface] frequency iwlist [interface] rate iwlist [interface] keys iwlist [interface] power iwlist [interface] txpower iwlist [interface] retry iwlist [interface] event iwlist [interface] auth iwlist [interface] wpakeys iwlist [interface] genie iwlist [interface] modulation iwlist --help iwlist --version DESCRIPTION Manual page iwlist(8) line 1 |
you may use
Code:
sudo iwlist wlan0 scanning Markus |
Wlan0 No scan results
|
I will be back in 30min
sorry for the inconvenience |
is wlan0 up? then there is something wrong with your wireless network, not with the computer.
Markus |
Well, I'll take off my computer now as well.
I'd recommend to check, if the wireless Accesspoint is correctly configured and if the wireless lan is on (maybe it is off after restarting it). Markus |
Quote:
Try to reboot the router. Then try to use no encryption and see if it works. If all this fails, I would reset the router to the default settings and start from there. Kind regards |
it's not the network other computers are accessing internet fine and i have restarted the routers, keep in mind it's not one router I have access too but two.
Everything was working fine until I installed the additional drivers the Broadcom STA and B43 this is the reason I can't access wireless Internet in windows as well. Since these drivers are not supported by linux could it be that they are not working properly, also i read somewhere that there are three possibilities the B43 STI (I think)and NDISwrapper? |
Question I did install the STA and B43 could it be possible that I need to complete remove one of them since it may be causing a conflict?
|
Maybe, just try it out and leave the system (the modules/drivers) as it was when it worked.
Markus |

|
I have installed the STA driver not connection no recognition of networks, I remove it the aromatically it started to recognize networks trying to connect but with no effect. Un installed and installed the B43 driver same as before, do you think that the B43 legacy one might work?
To answer your question I can not get to the point were i'm connected thru a wireless connection that was after installation of drivers the first time I installed linux and without anything specific in a middle of surfing the web it just disconnected that it came back and finally disconnected and I cant do anything to get it back. |
Should I go into windows and try to install drivers there to get a connection. I don know just looking at possibilities.
|
I don't no much about these modules. I remember I had such an issue with my Lenovo x100e, Slackware64 connected, Gentoo64 didn't, it was the same module, downloaded from Broadcom and then installed on the system. I never found an explanation for this.
You can only try the possible modules one after an other, never more than one at the same time. Markus |
Ok I uninstalled the drivers and found out that STA does not work at all on my machine so left with B43 one I uninstalled it then installed it and restarted each time actually a couple of times went to windows no connection there too........so after a day I decided to get a 50' Ethernet cable and pretend everything is fine. A day later I boot into windows and I've got a connection boot in linux and nothing at first ...but two minutes later I've got a connection and ever since I've got a wireless connection. So I guess linux even regenerates and patches itself too.
