Ubuntu 10.10 - CD hangs while Booting

Hello All,

I requested a Live CD from ubuntu. when it arrived i booted from it to try Ubuntu without installing. i booted from the live CD for about 5 times. now when i want to install Ubuntu it just hangs when the booting screen appears (when its written Ubuntu and 5 dots are flashing behind the word)

now i dont know what is the problem, i have also tried a different CD-ROM but same result. the CD is new/ scratch less but it just wont boot. hangs up all the time. Now i dont know how to install Ubuntu.

1- i can make a bootable USB. i downloaded the ISO and made a bootable USB with Universal USB installer, set my computer to boot from removable but that too didnt work.

2- or i can write my own cd. i will do that but i just wanted to find out why the CD doesnt work after working for 5 times.

On the ubuntu website you can download unibootin to make usb bootable
Yes you can down load a iso file and and burn it as iso image to make a boot able CD or DVD .
Beware that you do not burn it as a data CD or DVD

When it gets to the Ubuntu with 5 dots, try hitting <escape> to switch to verbose mode which would get us some info as to why it stops/hangs.

Post the output back here

As an asides, I have just tried installing a cheapo Realtek RTL8185 WiFi card in a desktop which booted Ubuntu 10.04 without problems previously. With the card installed - zippo! - hangs every time so far. :(

But, I digress... let us know what you get when you hit <escape> during boot before we start looking for weird hardware problems!

Play bonny! :hattip:

just tried unibootin too. that too doesn't work :(
will burn a Bootable CD using PowerISO or InfraRecorder, as InfraR is recommended by Ubuntu
by the way the option in the boot order of my PC's BIOS only says "Removable". the PC while starting up checks the floppy drive, i can hear the sound but then after like 2 seconds windows logo appears ... wonder if my PC is capable of booting from USB or not

I always wondered how a USB would work during starting up because there aren't any drivers.

Hi!

There's one more option, temporary I hope, use Wuby. Go here and scroll down, download and run wubi.exe.

What about your PC? How old is it? Post some specifications. Find info about your BIOS so that you know what "Removable" means, it should be F2 or F12 or alike during start up or look online.

As alraedy said, post the might be errors during boot time. Btw, how long did you wait for Ubuntu to boot? I've recently been installing 10.10 on my brother's PC and it did take some time before that purple boot screen with 5 dots has gone away.

Do you have 1G ram?

If the CD doesn't boot I doubt a usb would be a helpful starting point. I also doubt using wubi would be advised.

Consider some of the boot options and be sure to test the disk even if it was sent to you. It is a boot option also.
