I think my problem was ram. When I run memtest it did show bad memory but I was not sure what it meant, I said I am a idiot. the ram in my laptop was not the original and I put it back from another machine. I will find out soon but I think that was the problem. But the truth is I don't know how to trouble shoot Linux since I have not had to.
I will test the memory on a another machine to find the bad chip, It might have a lifetime warranty if I am lucky.
At least here you get people with some smarts. Try fixing a problem with Dell or MS a lost cause.

Would you please clarify. In your post at 7:42 am this morning you said:

I did run memtest86 and found no problems.
Now you are saying that memtest did find a problem?

Faulty memory can cause all sorts of strange behaviors. From your description, a faulty mouse or mouse connection would be an other possible culprit. It sounds as if something is triggering an apparent launch of an application or several applications simultaneously, hence the boxes opening in the bottom panel.

When I ran memtest I thought it had a part that said bad memory for some reason when the test completed it said pass but I realized it had found bad ram. I am not familiar with the app but next time will know better. I changed the ram and everything is peachy. I do need to learn some basic Linux commands and where to look for problems not hardware related. Thanks for all your help guys.

Every time I upgrade from Ubuntu 10.04 10.10 plays up. It becomes unstable, freezes up and when I reboot I naturally lose all of my unsaved work.
You'd think I would learn, I never have any trouble with 10.04 but keep getting seduced back to it.
This time I'm sticking with 10.04.

A little more detail might help here!

Just what do you mean by "unstable" for example.

I had several issues upgrading to 10.10, but every one of them turned out to be due to bad configuration or needing to upgrade some application. I have been running 10.10 since last September (test mode then) like I currently have 11.04 Beta running on one machine.

All of them are as stable as one could wish on a wide variety of hardware.
